Brad's Book List - July 2023

Brad's Book List - July 2023

Highlights from this month

What is your dream vacation?

Some prefer adventure, sightseeing, and a new country. Others prefer the same beach house or cabin in the woods with familiar restaurants and shops.

While my wife and I are different in many ways, I am incredibly grateful we both agree that the ideal vacation is sitting by the ocean (or a pool) and reading.

This month, our family took a week long vacation and enjoyed time in Huntington Beach. While the kids lived in the pool and went down the water slide a billion times, Sarah and I got sunburns and read to our hearts' delight.

Whether it is backpacking through Europe or a staycation at the house, I hope you will be able to get some time off this summer and rest. It is one of my greatest joys to turn my phone and email off for the week, sleep in, hang with the fam, and read. If you are able, below are a few books you may want to bring with you.

Top Books from July 2023:

Confession: I have never read a Stephen King book until this one. But having sold over 400 million copies of his books, I figured he would be a great person to learn the art of writing from.

The first half of On Writing is filled with stories of his childhood (some more enjoyable than others), and the back half is packed with brilliant and hilarious insights on how to become a better writer. While I don't plan on writing horror novels, I do hope to write some books one day. It was a joy to learn and get a peek into the mind of one of the best-selling authors of all time.

If you have zero desire to write better or to hear some stories about King's childhood, you might want to skip this one.

Freida McFadden has become one of my favorite fiction authors. Three main reasons: (1) Very short chapters. (2) She pulls you into the story by the end of chapter one. (3) There is always a wild plot twist that you didn't predict, even though you were trying to predict it.

I have read 5 of her books this year and enjoyed this one the most. Her books are psychological thrillers and this one was intense. It is about a high school girl who went missing, and the guy who was last seen with her.

When I am unable to put a book down, I give it 5 stars and recommend it to all my friends. You are welcome.

Our church is preaching through a sermon series on money right now, so I have been doing quite a bit of reading on the topic. God and Money was a delightful read from two Christians who met at Harvard Business School and how their lives were completely changed after taking a class on finances. Both men were making tons of money and felt led to set a ceiling on their spending/saving and then give everything additional away. In the book they do an excellent job unpacking the biblical passages on money (not all 2,000 verses, but quite a few) and helping Christians better save, spend, and give as servants of Jesus.

Killers of the Flower Moon recounts the devastating, but true story of the Osage Native American tribe that was forced westward by American settlers in the 1920's. After it was discovered this new land they inhabited in Oklahoma was rich with oil, the Osage instantly became wealthy. But instead of enjoying the millions of dollars, the Osage were taken advantage of (again), and then one by one, mysteriously murdered. The book follows the detectives who sought truth and justice in the midst of deceit, bribery, and evil.

Similar to Grann's book, The Wager, he occasionally gets bogged down with unnecessary details which makes the book 75 pages longer than it needs to be, but I am still recommending it.

Who doesn't want to read a book with a title like that? Well, I didn't at first. A friend recommended it and I had a hard time putting it down. Sethi is a secular "finance guru" who gives some incredibly helpful and practical advice on investing, saving, and "conscious spending." While I am grateful for the Christian books I read on finances, it is a bummer they rarely get practical. He has some unique arguments against home owning, stock trading, and big banks, while also being a fan of credit cards and crafting a rich life document.

Unfortunately, he doesn't believe giving is very important, but other than that, I have already implemented some of his advice on investing and budgeting, which have been very helpful. If you aren't sure how much money you currently spend each month... You should read this and get to work :)

Other Books Read in July 2023:

  • Worthy by Sinclair Ferguson - 3 stars
  • The Inmate by Freida McFadden - 5 stars
  • Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis - 4 stars

Top Quotes from July 2023:

  • "Why, I wonder, doesn't everybody carry a book around?" -Stephen King
  • "Too many Christians ask, 'How much should I give?' The right question is, 'How much do I need to keep?'" - Cortines and Baumer
  • "Why in the West do we need to devise techniques for witnessing to Christ? Perhaps the simple answer is that we have not lived in a way that is worthy of the gospel of Christ." -Sinclair Ferguson
  • "Rule Number 7 for a Rich Life: Beware of the endless search for 'advanced' tips. So many people seek out high-level answers to avoid the real, hard work of improving step by step. It’s easier to dream about winning the Boston Marathon than to go out for a ten-minute jog every morning. Sometimes the most advanced thing you can do is the basics, consistently." -Ramit Sethi
  • "Writing is refined thinking." -Stephen King

*Just because I recommend a book does not mean I endorse everything in it. Like the biblical narrative, there is always brokenness in the midst of beauty.

Last year was a bit wild. I set a goal to read 100 books and ended up reading 105. I love reading, but it was probably not great for my mind and soul. This year, I am slowing things down. I set a goal to read 1 book this year, and can proudly say I have achieved that goal! While I usually send out a monthly email with a brief description of my top books, I am changing things up for 2024. This year, I will be sending out monthly emails with a deep dive summary on one book I really enjoyed from...

Brad's Book List - 2023 Top Books from 2023 Yesterday, I received this text message from a member in our church: "Hey Brad- wanted to thank you for the book recommendation about having “the talk” with [my son]. We are about 1/2 way thru and it has been very helpful 🙏 🙏" This is one of the reasons I love to read. By reading and recommending good books to others, we can impact lives for the better. One of the best parts about my job is that I get paid to read. But for many years, I didn't take...

Brad's Book List - Nov. 2023 Highlights from this month This time of year is one of the most difficult for my book-loving, consumeristic heart. Everyone begins publishing their "Top Books of the Year" lists and I want to buy every book I see. (I am also confused how anyone can post a "Top Books of the Year" list when we still have an entire month of the year to go!) About two months ago, I felt like Jesus was asking me not to buy anymore books for the rest of 2023. That was not very pleasant...
